James Register Collection 1960s-1978.

This collection divies readily into three segments. The first division of materials all pertains to Billie Stroud, and includes articles, correspondence, photographs, lists of paintings sold and receipts for painting supplies. The second set of materials is similar in form, but concern Register's activities with Clementine Hunter. The last segment of the collection concerns Register's own personal accomplishments; specifically those related to copyrights of his own published works.

James Register lived in Natchitoches from 1963 until his death. Before then, he had traveled through this area for many years. As a writer, artist and art appreciator, he became aquatinted with promoters of art associated with Melrose Plantation. As a guest of Cammie Henry at Melrose Plantation in 1943, Register first met local, primitive folk artist Clementine Hunter.
